This tour includes a lot of curiosities and trivia about baroque Salzburg. Not for nothing Salzburg is also often referred to as “Rome of the North,” meaning the ample squares like Domplatz, Residenzplatz, Mozartplatz, Kapitelplatz, and Alter Markt in the heart of Salzburg’s old town.
The town’s architecture has strongly been influenced by Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Italians, also called “Welschen” at the time, were invited to Salzburg by the archbishops who had studied in Italy. But in the course of history also local artists and architects like Fischer von Erlach established themselves. Salzburg offers a great mix of baroque churches and house fronts as well as baroque gardens. On a trawl through the old and new town you will soon feel fascinated by this bygone, yet still so present architecture. Have you already acquired a taste for baroque Salzburg?
