The famous Mirabell Gardens were redesigned around 1690 under Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf von Thun to plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completely remodeled around 1730 by Franz Anton Danreiter.
The Dwarf Garden dates back to the time of Archbishop Franz Anton Harrach who had 28 misshapen creatures made of white Untersberg marble erected south-west of the palace. Unfortunately, nothing is known about the creator of these mysterious figures. On virtually all European courts it was common practice to hold pitiable crooked persons for amusement. However, due to their loyalty they were highly esteemed and treated well. The garden gained fame as a film location of "The Sound of Music".
