The fortress is the town’s landmark and highlight on the “Festungsberg,”
Hohensalzburg Fortress is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. During its long history since the 11th century it has always remained unconquered by enemy troops. The more than 900-year-old citadel dates back to the investiture controversy between emperor and pope over the right to appoint the bishop.
Today the fortress is open to the public all year round and artists from around the world meet here for courses at the International Summer Academy. The medieval rooms and the Fortress Museum are well worth seeing. Furthermore, the Fortress Restaurant, the Fortress Concerts, and the lovely Christmas market during advent are worth mentioning.
